Myth: Acne is caused by dirt

Reality: Dirt doesn't cause acne. Your skin normally sheds dead cells and also produces its own nourishing oil, but when these processes get off-balance, it can clog your pores and lead to blemishes.

Tip: Avoid over-washing or stripping your skin’s natural oils with harsh alcohol. This just causes more imbalance and can actually make blemishes worse.

Myth: Acne is caused by certain foods you eat

Reality: Food doesn’t cause acne. In fact, scientists have been unable to find a substantial connection between diet and acne.

Tip: Eating healthy foods helps to nourish your skin, but don't be afraid to indulge every now and then.

Myth: Only teenagers get acne

Reality: Anyone can get acne. Over 85% of all people 12-24 have acne, but it can also start as late as your 20s or 30s. It's estimated that one in four adults between the ages of 25 and 44 experiences acne.

Tip: Don’t be afraid to seek out treatment, whatever your age. There is no cure for acne, but there are many ways to help heal and prevent breakouts, including Proactiv Solution.

Myth: Spot treatment works best

Reality: Since blemishes take 2-3 weeks to develop, you're treating an old symptom rather than the problem itself. Help stop the blemishes from developing in the first place by treating your whole face every day, even when you aren't breaking out.

Tip: Keeping to a regular skin care regimen will help keep your face and body clear of acne.

Myth: It's cosmetic, so it's not a big deal

Reality: Though acne is not a serious health threat, it does affect the way you feel about yourself, which can cause low self-esteem and even depression.

Tip: Don't let anyone discourage you from seeking treatment. Find help. You'll be glad you did.

Myth: Sun exposure helps clear acne

Reality: While small amounts of sun exposure may initially improve acne, continuous sunbathing often increases plugging of the pores, producing blackheads, whiteheads, and small pimples.

Tip: The risks of sun exposure outweigh its minimal benefits. ALWAYS use sunscreen. For acne-prone skin, use non-comedogenic (non-pore clogging) products.

Myth: Acne is curable

Reality: Not yet, but don't lose hope. For now, you can help prevent and control acne with continued daily use of products such as Proactiv® Solution, which contain powerful acne-fighting ingredients.

Tip: Even if your blemishes go away, your acne is not cured. It's important to be diligent about your skin care regimen, even after your skin is clear.
